My name is Rylee, I’m a junior at CU Boulder studying Art History, currently working on my honor’s thesis about Modernist art and WWI and the influences from other cultures that were involved in the war. I’m from Kansas City, Missouri, and moved to Fort Collins when I was 10 years old. I graduated from Rocky Mountain High School in 2014 alongside 450 others.
I’d love to see the world. This class has made me want to see even more of it. This class has also made me more empathetic and kind, and much more aware of other cultures and world views. I wasn’t sure what to expect out of Global Media Literacy; at first I thought it would be a social media class with a global focus, but I found that it was much more complex than that. Media is the way we communicate information through art, text, creativity, and it is so variable from area to area.
Art museums are such beautiful collections of all types of cultural expressions, though after taking this class and other similar courses I see how they can be problematic. Taking artifacts from one culture out of their context and placing them in a Western context degrades the importance of other cultural art forms, and I think this is something I would be interested in studying in the future.
